positioning for the brightest blooms

last week i shared a bit about the planning process i undertook to shoot the cherry blossoms at sunrise around the tidal basin in dc. once the sun was up, the challenges changed a bit. last year when i shot, the sun was higher and brighter. this time, the early morning light required more positioning to find blossoms that were in the sun versus shade. the light also changed rapidly requiring one to constantly be repositioning and adjusting settings. i used the macro capability of my 24-105mm lens and also used this opportunity to get to know my new 50mm, leveraging it’s super-wide aperture setting to allow in more light and shallow depth of field for a beautiful bokeh.

i knew i wanted to convey the airiness that i felt as i walked amongst these amazing trees and looked up into the delicate, ethereal canopy of blooms – so i often overexposed my shots, creating brighter, lighter looking images.

today i drove downtown and noticed most of the trees have already begun to turn a brilliant green – you’d never know that this is how they looked just one week before.

Weeee! How pretty! Thanks for allowing me a close-up of the cherry blossoms. I saw them mostly while driving around the area this year, but not so close and personal. Beautiful work you’ve done.
