big advertisers get socially conscious

model_nordstrom2 ’tis the season for stacks of holiday catalogs on my dining room table. most go in the trash, but when the nordstrom catalog came in all its thick, shiny, silver brilliance i had to indulge. a few pages in i was struck by a gorgeous model wearing a pretty wrap… after checking out the wrap, i then noticed in the corner of the image a wheel – the wheel of a wheelchair. the model makes a few appearances in the catalog, and after doing a quick online search, i found a few other images and some more detailed info. apparently, nordstrom and target are two large retailers who have embraced the use of advertisements with disabled models (they began over a year ago) and others such as kmart and eddie bauer have followed suit. makes sense. there are over 40 million people with disabilities – and wallets- in the us. i knew i liked nordstrom for a reason (they also have great cookies). here are 2 interesting articles about this topic that are worth a read.
